Dante vs consumer society
As a part of a joint project of SPbU Representative Office in Italy and the University for Foreigners of Siena (Italy) on holding online seminars there will be given online lecture “Dante vs consumer society” by Professor Pietro Cataldi.
“Inferno — Canto I” of “Divine Comedy” by A. Dante begins with declared goal of contributing to radical reform of the global society, and identification of the worst evil existing in the consumer society that must be fought.
During the lecture Professor P. Cataldi will focus on this topic, in particular on the first canto of the poem. Using 55-60 stanzas of the poem which are focused on the image of a person who has become rich and after that was impoverished again as example the lecturer will define the curse model used throughout the Canto I.
Lecturer
Pietro Cataldi (Rome, 1961) teaches modern Italian literature at the University for Foreigners of Siena (Italy). From 2015 to 2021 he had been Rector of the University for Foreigners of Siena (Italy).Together with Romano Luperini he is an author of a commentary to “Divine Comedy” (Le Monnier, 1989, and further editions). He is also an author of publications on Dante’s works (including “Dante e la nascita dell’allegoria”, Palumbo, 2008).
