House with a tower of Vyacheslav Ivanov and symbolism in the Russian literature
St Petersburg Representative office at the Russian House in Barcelona invites you to join the online lecture "House with a tower of Vyacheslav Ivanov and symbolism in the Russian literature". The lecture will be delivered by PhD in Philology Nina Shcherbak.
The House with a tower was an apartment of Vyacheslav Ivanov where the poet resided with his wife, Lydia Zinovieva-Annibal. The House with a tower is a unique cultural phenomenon of the 20th century and a gathering place for the most famous writers and artists of the Silver Age. It was the House with a tower where Alexander Block read The Unknown Lady, Anna Akhmatova read her first poems. Ivan Bunin and Maxim Gorky visited the House with a tower, and future creator Vsevolod Meyerhold of the theatrical biomechanics showed bold directorial experiments.
The Silver Age was at the junction of two centuries, when the greatest thinkers, poets and philosophers felt themselves at the ending point of the important era, after which, as it seemed to them then, there would be nothing. Poets of that time experimented dividing life in "before" and "after" the First World War and revolution. Problems of symbols, myths, words, and poetics have risen to the top of the agenda.
