On 8 February (28 January, old style) 1724, St Petersburg University was founded by decree of Peter the Great, which also established the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
The celebration was officially included in the St Petersburg Law "On holidays and memorial days in St Petersburg" on 16 October 2024.
