Doctors at the St Petersburg University Clinic develop an app for patients with kidney stone disease
Nariman Gadzhiev, a urologist at the Pirogov Clinic of High Medical Technologies at St Petersburg University, has developed the Stone MD mobile app for patients with kidney stone disease. This application can replace several other health monitoring apps at once.
According to Nariman Gadzhiev, kidney stone disease is a highly recurrent condition. Often within five years after surgery, 50% (and within ten years 80%) of patients will have the problem again. ‘This is due to the fact that, having undergone treatment, patients often go back to their usual way of life: they do not follow the diet and do not comply with the doctor’s instructions,’ explained Nariman Gadzhiev.
The Stone MD app will tell you the level of acidity (pH) − this is important for patients who receive stone dissolution therapy. A calendar with the dates of stent insertion or its removal is also available to the user so that they do not forget to visit the doctor on time and prevent the risk of complications.

Using the new app, patients will be able to calculate their risk of developing a recurrence of the disease and, based on this, receive individual recommendations for prevention. A water diary will be available to the user. As Nariman Gadzhiev said, in fact, following a drinking regime can reduce the risk of recurrence of the disease by 50-60%. Patients will also be able to enter information about the food they eat, calculating calories and the content of proteins, citrates and other substances. Proper dietary assessment will help to improve metabolism and avoid stone formation and disease progression.
The Stone MD app can be downloaded here for Android, and here for Apple.
