Medical doctors from St Petersburg University receive state awards of the Russian Federation
By the Decree of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Piotr Yablonsky, Vice-Rector for Medical Activities at St Petersburg University, has been awarded the medal of the Order "For Services to the Fatherland," First Class, in recognition of his services in healthcare and many years of conscientious work. Evgenii Sosnin, Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at St Petersburg University, has been conferred the honorary title "Honoured Physician of the Russian Federation."
Professor Piotr Yablonsky is a surgeon of the highest qualification category, with research interests encompassing contemporary aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, pulmonology, and phthisiology, as well as lung transplantation. In 2006, the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation named Piotr Yablonsky the winner of the All-Russian competition "Physician of the Year" in the nomination "Best Surgeon" for successfully performing the first bilateral consecutive lung transplantation in Russia. Notably, Piotr Yablonsky pioneered the use of robot-assisted surgery for treating patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, a technique employed in over 150 operations to date.

Professor Piotr Yablonsky is a winner of the Government Prize of the Russian Federation in Education (2013) and of the St Petersburg Government Prize for scientific achievements contributing to the improvement of the quality of training of specialists and personnel of higher qualification (2016). In 2007, he was bestowed the honorary title "Honoured Physician of the Russian Federation" by Presidential Decree. Since 2009, Piotr Yablonsky has led the Saint Petersburg Phthisiopulmonology State Research Institute of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Russia’s oldest tuberculosis control centre. In 2021, Piotr Yablonsky was conferred the title of an "Honorary Citizen of St Petersburg" by the St Petersburg Legislative Assembly.
Professor Yablonsky has dedicated over two decades to St Petersburg University. Since 2001, he has led the Department of Hospital Surgery and served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for more than a decade. Currently, he holds the position of Vice-Rector for Medical Activities at the University.
Evgenii Sosnin, Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at St Petersburg University, is a physician of the highest qualification category specialising in paediatric urology and surgery. Evgenii Sosnin is a co-author of more than 60 research publications, three educational and methodological guidelines, a priority patent application and a priority utility model patent application of the Russian Federation. In 2023, he was awarded the "Honoured Worker of Higher Education" distinction by Alexander Beglov, Governor of St Petersburg and Member of the Board of Trustees of St Petersburg University.
