A new master's programme of St Petersburg University prepares specialists in forest management
Forests in Russia cover about half of its territory. In the modern world, there is a requirement for forest sector specialists to manage such a huge resource. They need to have: an understanding of the natural processes that occur in forest ecosystems; awareness of the consequences of management decisions; and knowledge of the forest legislation.
The master’s programme of St Petersburg University ‘Forest Geography and Sustainable Forest Management’ is unique and designed to train qualified specialists in forest management.

The programme will be interesting to those who plan to continue their education in this area of expertise, or to receive a new profession with in-depth knowledge and professional skills. Its advantages are a combination of both theoretical and practical fundamentals for forest management. During the training, master’s students will receive relevant knowledge of forest geography and the laws of their formation in various environmental conditions. They will also study the forest typology and specialised subjects, and the regulatory framework governing the activities of the forest sector.
The main areas of research are devoted to: the dynamics and spatial distribution of forest resources and their rational use; sustainable forest management of the territory; and forecasting the changes in the structure of the forest resources. Students will have access to Russian and international best practices in the forest management system. Among foreign partner universities are: Uppsala University and Stockholm University (Sweden); the University of Tartu (Estonia); Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (Finland); and the University of Hohenheim (Germany).
This is a full-time, two-year course, and there will be scholarship and paid tuition places.
Occupational standards and current requirements of employers are taken into account. Graduates will be able to build their career in: forestry production organisations; forestry management; forestry production; expertise in this field; and research and state institutions.
