SPbU participates in the St Petersburg International Legal Forum
The XII St Petersburg International Legal Forum, the largest platform for discussion of the development of modern legal science and the modernisation of the Russian legal system, began its work today. By tradition, experts from St Petersburg University will participate in this important event in the world of law and legislation.
At the round table "Legal Protection of Russia’s National Interests in a World Order Undergoing Transformation", moderated by Sergey Belov, Dean of the SPbU Law Faculty, participants will discuss how, in today’s realities, the law and the potential of the law enforcement system can be used to counter new global threats and challenges, as well as to ensure the fulfilment of the needs of individuals, society and the state for safe and sustainable development. The discussion will be attended by Konstantin Chuichenko, Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation, Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Honorary Doctor of SPbU, and other renowned legal scholars.
One of the important issues to be addressed at the Forum will be the defence of traditional Russian spiritual and moral values. In a complex international environment, their preservation and promotion is key to the security and sovereignty of the Russian state. According to experts, the strengthening of Russian civic identity, patriotism and unity of the multinational population of the Russian Federation also occupies a special place today. These and other questions will be discussed in the session "Legal Protection of Traditional Values: Us and Them", which will be addressed by the Rector of the SPbU, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolay Kropachev.
Participants in the roundtable "Punishment before Sentencing: Is there an Alternative to Detention?" will discuss how to ensure a balance between the interests of investigation and human rights. In the course of the discussion, they will seek answers to the questions of how preventive measures are regulated in foreign legislation and what factors influence the choice of pre-trial detention as such a measure. The head of the SPbU G.O.R.K.I. Centre, the former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Austria, Karin Kneissl, will take part in the discussion. In addition, the expert will express her opinion during the discussion "Abolition of Law in Western Countries".
The round table "Digital Justice: A Step into the Future", leading experts will discuss the prospects of digital transformation of justice, share their experiences in implementing innovative solutions and try to trace the path of modernisation of the legal system through the prism of technology. One of the speakers will be Vladislav Arkhipov, Director of the Centre for Information Security and Digital Transformation Research at SPbU. He will also participate in the sessions "Stolen Identity: Legal Aspects Related to the Regulation of Deepfakes and Voice Imitation" and "Platform-Based Work in the Digital Economy: Legal Issues Related to Regulation (Federal Law on Aggregators)".
The XIV International Youth Legal Forum will be held within the framework of the Forum, which will bring together students, young lawyers, teachers and mentors, as well as representatives of public authorities, the scientific community and business from the Russian Federation and abroad. St Petersburg University will host the main events.
St Petersburg University will have a stand at the St Petersburg International Legal Forum. Visitors will be able to learn about one of SPbU’s most important projects in the field of law — "Law Enforcement Monitoring" — as well as the work of the Centre for Information Security and Digital Transformation Research, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Control and Oversight Research at the SPbU and the Centre for State Language Studies. Representatives of the SPbU will brief the Forum participants on the activities of the University’s Legal Clinic, the application of the clinical approach to teaching and the SPbU’s interaction with employers.
A selection of videos presenting the SPbU’s basic and advanced training programmes and online legal courses has been recorded especially for the Forum. These can be viewed on the touch panel and downloaded if required. Guests will also be able to take an online tour of the university’s building on 22nd Street, where Russia’s leading lawyers have studied and taught, and purchase legal literature from the SPbU Publishing House.
The Branch of the M. Gorky Scientific Library of the Faculty of Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences has prepared expositions on the anniversaries of two outstanding Russian lawyers — the 180th anniversary of the birth of Anatoly Kony and the 120th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Shargorodsky, providing copies of rare archival documents and books. The stand will also feature an exhibition dedicated to famous lawyers — alumni of the University.
