St Petersburg University enters the world’s top 100 universities in mathematics, philosophy, international relations and petroleum engineering according to the QS World University Rankings

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 published today, St Petersburg University has entered the world’s top 100 universities in four subjects: Mathematics, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, and Petroleum Engineering. It came ever closer to the cherished hundred in another four subjects: History, Archaeology, Linguistics, and Modern Languages.

The remarkable thing is that this year the University has entered the subject ranking in Archaeology for the first time. In one go, it took a place in the 101–150 group. Additionally, one of the new ranked lists for the University is Petroleum Engineering, where it is ranked in the 51— 100 group.

The coronavirus pandemic has become a great challenge not only for Russian but also for global education. We are pleased that during these hard times St Petersburg University continues to demonstrate stable growth in a wide range of subjects. This has become possible thanks to the well-consolidated work of the entire staff of the University.

Nikolay Kropachev, Rector of St Petersburg University

The University has made a big breakthrough in the following subjects: Philosophy (here it moved from the 151–200 group to the much higher group of 51–100); and Politics and International Relations (it bettered its score and moved from the 101–150 group to the 51–100 group). The University is ranked 61st in the world in Mathematics. Also, the University approaches the top 100 in History, Linguistics, and Modern Languages (it is ranked in the group 101–150 in all of them).

Additionally, the University has noticeably improved its performance in the broad subject areas. For example, in Social Sciences & Management, it moved up 14 places compared to last year and is now ranked 123rd in the world. In Arts & Humanities and Natural Sciences, the University is listed next to the world’s top 100 universities, taking 118th and 131st places, respectively.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject has been published since 2011 by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The compilers of the ranking now evaluate the activities of the world’s top universities in 51 subjects, combined in five areas of knowledge: Arts & Humanities; Engineering & Technology; Life Sciences & Medicine; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences & Management.

The QS subject ranking methodology is based on four indicators: academic reputation; employer reputation; research citations per paper article in relevant journals; and the University H-index with a sufficient number of publications and reviews of the academic community and employers.
