St Petersburg University is hosting an international conference on group theory and group rings ‘Groups and Group Rings’

An international conference on group theory and group rings ‘Groups and Group Rings’ is being held at St Petersburg University. The conference is organised by the Euler International Mathematical Institute and the Laboratory of Modern Algebra and Applications, St Petersburg University.
The conference started with a lecture ‘Harmonic Analysis in Symmetric Spaces’ by Dipendra Prasad, who is Professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (India) and Chief Researcher of the Laboratory of Modern Algebra and Applications, St Petersburg University. At the lecture, the professor analysed several models describing the actions of group G on a finite set. He also looked into the theory of the Gelfand-Graev representation of a reductive group over a finite field.
During the five days of the conference, mathematicians from all over the world will discuss such topics as: Diophantine equations in groups and group rings; problems of group growth and additive combinatorics; dynamic properties of group actions; asymptotic and geometric aspects of group theory; and other important issues in the field of group theory, group rings and representation theory. The event is being attended by scientists from: St Petersburg University; Steklov Mathematical Institute; the University of California; the University of Ottawa; the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and many other leading academic institutions in Russia and the world.
The theme of the conference is group theory. This is one of the most important branches of modern algebra, which we are developing at our laboratory. We are pleased that we have managed to gather together leading experts in group theory and representation theory and discuss current issues in these areas.
Tatiana Smirnova-Nagnibeda, Professor of Mathematics, the University of Geneva, Leading Research Associate, the Laboratory of Modern Algebra and Applications, St Petersburg University
The Laboratory of Modern Algebra and Applications was established at St Petersburg University in 2018. The laboratory’s activities are funded by the mega grant programme of the Government of the Russian Federation. The conference ‘Groups and Group Rings’ is the first to be held by the laboratory.
