St Petersburg University lecturers receive national awards for combating the coronavirus

The University’s lecturers – outstanding doctors who are COVID-19 frontliners – have been awarded the Order of Pirogov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree on 21 June – the Medical Worker Day. The new state decoration – the Order of Pirogov – is awarded to employees of Russian medical and scientific institutions for their great contribution to the fight against COVID-19, and their dedication and professionalism displayed in the performance of professional duty. The state award is named after Professor Nikolai Pirogov, a Russian surgeon and the founder of field surgery.
The Order of Pirogov have been awarded to:
- Andrei Boiarkin, Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at St Petersburg University, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at St Petersburg State Budgetary Healthcare Institution ‘City Multifield Hospital No 2’
- Vladimir Volchkov, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at St Petersburg University, Chief Medical Officer at St Petersburg State Budgetary Healthcare Institution ‘City Multifield Hospital No 2’
- Igor Ivanov, Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Internal Medicine Propaedeutics, Clinical Director at St Petersburg State Budgetary Healthcare Institution ‘St Martyr George City Hospital’ (No 4)
- Vadim Nikolaenko, Clinical Professor of Medicine, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Ophthalmology at St Petersburg State Budgetary Healthcare Institution ‘City Multifield Hospital No 2’

- Elena Sokirko, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Surgical Dentistry, a maxillofacial surgeon
- Aleksandr Sofronov, Lecturer, Chief Medical Officer at St Petersburg State Public Healthcare Institution ‘I.I. Skvortsov-Stepanov City Psychiatric Hospital No 3’
Liliia Uon was awarded posthumously. She was a lecturer at St Petersburg University, and Head of the Pulmonology Department at St Petersburg State Budgetary Healthcare Institution ‘St Martyr Elizabeth City Hospital’. For almost 40 years, she had worked as a doctor. Liliia Uon was also awarded posthumously the distinction ‘For Valour in Rescuing’ – for the courage and dedication displayed in the performance of professional duty to save lives and preserve the health of people in St Petersburg during the period of counteracting the spread of the new coronavirus infection in high risk conditions. Colleagues will remember Liliia Uon as a dedicated and responsible expert who, over the years, managed to bring tens of thousands of patients with serious illnesses back to life.
