St Petersburg University team wins the 30th International Mathematics Competition for University Students IMC 2023
The team from St Petersburg University has won the 30th International Mathematics Competition for University Students IMC 2023, held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. They outperformed 69 universities from around the world, scoring 310 points in the team competition.
The team, led by Professor Fedor Petrov from St Petersburg University, consisted of seven students studying in the bachelor’s programmes "Mathematics" and "Data Science". The first-place winners of the competition were Aleksei Moshkin, Rozalina Mirgalimova, Aleksei Vlasov, and Aleksei Roze. Ivan Bakharev received the Grand First Prize, and Ivan Gaidai-Turlov, just like in the previous year, was awarded the highest honour of the competition, the Grand Grand First Prize.

In the individual competition, Maksim Turevskii, a student from the University, emerged as the absolute winner of the International Competition. With a score of 93 points, he surpassed 392 participants representing renowned universities from Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.
The competition saw the participation of 70 teams from universities worldwide, including Armenia, Croatia, Turkmenistan, Brazil, China, and others. Russia was represented by St Petersburg University, Ural Federal University, the Higher School of Economics University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Novosibirsk State University, and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University). St Petersburg University was the only Russian university to make it into the top 10 of the competition based on points.
Students of any year of study under the age of 23 can take part in the International Mathematics Competition. Participants can score up to 10 points for solving each task.
It is not the first year that students from St Petersburg University have achieved successful results in the largest competition in higher mathematics. In previous years, students from the University scored two individual victories. In the 28th Competition, the University team got the first place.
The competition is organised by University College London, in collaboration with the American University in Bulgaria. The competition consists of two competitive days, during which participants are required to solve ten problems across various mathematical topics, including linear algebra, combinatorics, real and complex analysis, probability theory, and number theory.
