Vladimir Putin awards the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I class to SPbU’s Professor Georgii Tolstoi

SPbU’s Professor Georgii Tolstoi has been awarded the highest order of the Russian Federation  - Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I class.

The decree was signed by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and now it is publically available. The Order is evidence of the Russian lawyer’s contribution to the legal sciences and educating highly-qualified specialists, as the decree states.

The Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I class  says “Benefit, honour and fame”.

Georgii Tolstoi is author of over 200 research papers, including monographs and autobiographies.  His ideas and projects on ownership and ownership rights, relationship at law, legal systems and codification of the civil legislation contributed to the current legislation and made scientific bases for research.

Over a half of the century, Georgii Tolstoi has been working at St Petersburg University, and he says that his most profitable investment of the intellectual capital is his students.

The Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I class was instituted in 1994 and is the highest order of the Russian Federation. The President of France Jacques Chirac was the first who had been awarded by the Order. Among those who have been awarded are about 70 people, including the first woman to have flown in space Valentina Tereshkova, the first President of the Russian Federation Boris Eltsin, a ballerina Maia Plisetskaia, Minister of the Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov and others.

In 1990–1991, Georgii Tolstoi was a member of the Committee for Constitutional Surveillance of the USSR.  Over 20 years, he was a deputy editor-in-chief of the all-union research and engineering journal “Legal Studies”; over 10 years, he was a member of the expert committee of the VAK for philosophy and law in the USSR. He is a member of the         Russian Federation Presidential Council for Codification and Improvement of the Civil Legislation. In 2000, he was elected as corresponding member of the RAS, in 2003 as academician.

He has been awarded by the Koni’s medal (1999), Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" IV class (2002), Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" III class (2007). He is an honoured worker of science of the Russian Federation and honoured professor of SPbU.
