Web of Science Awards 2017

SPbU Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics Prof Gennadii Leonov, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Prof Nikolai Kuznetsov, and Research Associate of the SPbU Center for Algorithmic Biotechnology Aleksei Gurevich are among the most cited Russian researchers, according to the Web of Science Awards 2017.

St Petersburg University is an only university in Russia to prepare three nominees for the awards.

For the second year in a row, the most cited Russian mathematicians are Nikolai Kuznetsov and Gennadii Leonov.

Expert from Clarivate Analytics Pavel Kasianov

“Although we decided to award a prize to different nominees each year, we nevertheless are proud to say that Nikolai Kuznetsov and Gennadii Leonov remain the most cited researchers in mathematics who are far ahead of their rivals” — said the expert.

The studies of Prof Leonov’s school are highly popular in the academic community as their projects are at the forefront of research and has integrated nature, says Nikolai Kuznetsov. “For the last years, his research school has achieved success both in practice and in the theory of measure and qualitative theory of dynamical systems, — said the scientist. — In particular, we have carried out an analysis of PLL and GPS/ GLONASS, onset of oscillations at the Sayano–Shushenskaya Dam, considered the Keldysh model of the flutter suppression and developed rigorous methods to its analysis. Our success is due to St Petersburg University and support of Prof Leonov’s school on the federal level”.

In 2017, Russian Science Foundation prolonged the grant to support the laboratories and departments, and the Council on the Grants at the President of the Russian Federation awarded a grant to Nikolay Kuznetsov as a young scientist and head of the leading research school for 2018-2019.

Among the most cited researchers in biology in 2017 is 28 year-old Aleksei Gurevich who is a research fellow at the Centre for Algorithmic Biotechnology.

“It wouldn’t be possible without Pavel Pevzner who is the head of our laboratory and introduced me to the world of bioinformatics seven years ago, — said Aleksei Gurevich. — I would like to express my gratitude to St Petersburg University and Russian Science Foundation for an opportunity to excel science in Russia. It is vital that they support both fundamental fields like mathematics and physics and young fields like bioinformatics. They were actively engaged in opening the Centre for Algorithmic Biotechnology as a laboratory that is on a par with the world’s leading laboratories. I hope that this year we will be able to open an educational programmes in Bioinformatics that will be headed by the chief research associate Alla Lapidus who returned from the USA several years ago and is actively contributing to the advancements in bioinformatics in Russia. I am happy that our young science is becoming more and more popular among the young researchers. As the science is rapidly developing, it provides an excellent opportunity for young scientists to excel in their career”.

The citation laureates were selected according to the citation index in the Web of Science Core Collection. The Clarivate Analytics analyzed over 1,600 highly cited publications affiliated with the Russian organisations. Only publications with less than 30 authors are considered. If the publication has a vast number of authors, it is hardly possible to identify the contribution of each of them. Each among 17 fields of science has its own citation threshold to identify the most cited researchers. February 15, there was an awarding ceremony in Moscow. The Web of Science Awards has been presented in Russia since 2014.
