Advanced Mathematics
01.04.01 In English and Russian
Level of education Master
Type of instruction Full-time
Duration 2 years
Programme description
- The programme was launched at St Petersburg University in 2019 and is aimed at English-speaking students interested in mathematics and theoretical computer science. It is carried out in collaboration with the Chebyshev Laboratory, headed by the Fields Medalist Stanislav Smirnov, Professor of the University of Geneva
- The programme offers a completely new curriculum covering a wide range of advanced topics in theoretical mathematics, theoretical computer science, and their applications
- The programme is designed to provide an opportunity to receive an advanced fundamental mathematical education. Students can choose their majors in a wide range of core branches of mathematics. Cuttingedge achievements are taken into account in the programme. Training starts with an intensive fundamental course, which summarises the main sections of the ‘Mathematics’ bachelor's programme that are not included in the standard courses at other universities. The keystone of the programme is the offered wide system of elective courses and seminars in: Algebra; Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory; Topology and Geometry; Mathematical and Functional Analysis; Differential Equation Theory Analysis and Theory of Dynamical Systems; Mathematical Physics; Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics; and Mathematical Logic and Combinatorics. Students are involved in research activities and have an opportunity to take part in Russian and foreign scientific schools and conferences

Our advantages
- Current course curricula make it possible for students to major in a wide range of areas: Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory; Theoretical Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Logic; Algebra and Number Theory; Geometry and Topology; Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems and Mathematical Physics; and Applications of Mathematics
- Combination of Russian mathematical traditions with advanced experience in teaching mathematics and theoretical computer science at top world universities
- Top rank teaching staff: our lecturers are active scientists and experienced teachers
- The programme is implemented in close cooperation with the academic environment of St Petersburg. Students can take part in workshops and research projects in mathematics and theoretical computer science, implemented in various universities and research institutes of St Petersburg. These include the Chebyshev Laboratory and St Petersburg Department of Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They organise regular workshops at which leading researchers from all over the world give invited reports.
- The master’s programme naturally continues our bachelor’s programme 01.03.01 "Mathematics", which attracts the best applicants from all over Russia. However, the curriculum is structured so that students who come from other bachelor’s programmes will be able to acquire the necessary knowledge that was not previously available to them due to the difference in bachelor’s programmes
- The best students are provided with increased scholarships of 25,000 roubles from the Home Towns Foundation (students that take part in research grants can also receive additional finance from these sources)
- Travel support for participation in conferences, summer schools and other scientific events
