35 Years of the Diaghilev Museum of Modern Art Collection
SPbU to host the grand opening of the anniversary exhibition ‘35 Years of the Diaghilev Museum of Modern Art Collection‘, Russia’s first university museum of contemporary art.
The Museum’s collection began forming in the early 1990s and now comprises over 500 works of modern art—painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, decorative arts, and digital art. The exhibition will feature masterpieces from the collection, including works by Leningrad’s independent artists of the 1960s—1980s. Among them are:
- Alexander Baturin (Staropeterhof School)
- Followers of Osip Sidlin’s school: Anatoly Basin and Natalia Toreeva
- Vladimir Ovchinnikov and Anatoly Vasilyev, participants in the banned ’Riggers’ Exhibition" (1964, Hermitage)
- Oleg Lyagachev-Khelga, Valentin Afanasyev, Vadim Voinov
- Gleb Bogomolov, Anatoly Belkin, Valentin Gerasimenko, and Nikolay Sazhin, participants in the first major nonconformist exhibitions (1974–1975)
The exhibition also highlights St Petersburg’s painting tradition through works by Felix Volosenkov, Vyacheslav Mikhailov, Valery Lukka, Zaven Arshakuni, and others. The graphic arts section showcases pieces by Georgy Kovenchuk, Evgeny Ukhnalyov, Valery Mishin, and more. New acquisitions to the Museum’s collection will also be displayed.
