Concert by the Choir of St Petersburg University
The Choir of St Petersburg University will perform at the University.
One of the oldest amateur choirs in Russia, a laureate of all-Russian and international competitions, the Choir of St Petersburg State University was founded in 1889. The choir consists of students, graduates, and faculty members of the University, with over 100 singers who specialise in performing large-scale musical forms.
The choir’s repertoire includes Mahler’s "Eighth Symphony," Orff’s "Carmina Burana," Mozart’s and Verdi’s "Requiems," Tchaikovsky’s opera "Iolanta," Mascagni’s "Cavalleria Rusticana," and many other works.
The ensemble performs on the best concert stages in St Petersburg, collaborates with leading orchestras and soloists, and regularly prepares Russian premieres in partnership with the Mariinsky Theatre and the Philharmonic Society. The choir presents several programmes each concert season in the Great Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonic. Alongside large-scale musical forms, the singers excel in the delicate nuances of a cappella miniatures and folk songs.
The choir has successfully toured in European countries, and in 2002, it was honoured to participate in the Papal Mass in Vatican City. The Choir of St Petersburg University was the first non-professional choir in Russia to perform in the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York (2015).
