The Israeli—Palestinian tragedy. Introduction to the history of military conflicts
Geopolitical Observatory for Russia Key Issues (G.O.R.K.I.) once again opens its doors to university students and invites them to its second seminar — a mock conference titled "UN Security Council Meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict".
The conflict, which first erupted around the time of the founding of the United Nations, escalated on 7 October this year when Hamas attacked Israeli territory. At least 1,400 people were killed in the attack. The Israeli military responded with a bloody revenge campaign that resulted in the deaths of more than 14,000 people, mostly civilians. The UN General Assembly passed a widely supported resolution calling for a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds.
But what are the interests of UN member states in the UN Security Council? What factors will prove decisive? What obstacles will states face in finding a solution?
Answers to these and other questions will be sought by our participants in the mock UN Security Council meeting, which begins at 11:00 am on 9 December. The session’s special guest will be Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations. He will speak via video link from New York about the specifics of the stalemate surrounding the conflict.
Lectures by Dr Karin Kneissl and other SPbU professors will help you to understand the background of this conflict and make an informed decision about the position of the country you represent. The lectures will take place on 2 December from 10 am to 7 pm.
Coffee breaks will be provided on both days of the seminar to allow you to network with colleagues and faculty.
Event working language is English.
