Microcosm: The Evolution of Mineral Research Methods
28 June 2025
Time: 12 pm
St Petersburg, Universitetskaya Embankment, 7–9
St Petersburg University hosts weekly guided tours of its museums.
The world of minerals is astonishingly diverse. While nearly 6,000 mineral species are known today, just 200 years ago, geologists identified only 100. Advances in magnifying instruments have greatly contributed to the development of mineralogical science.
During the tour, visitors will explore various methods of studying minerals — from simple magnifying glasses to modern electron microscopes. The programme consists of two parts: a theoretical segment held in the museum and a research segment conducted at the University’s resource centre.
Limited spaces available; tickets must be purchased in advance via the website.
