Public Talk: The Art of Detective Fiction — Russian, British, American, and French Perspectives
As part of the alumni discussion club, Nina Shcherbak, an Associate Professor at St Petersburg University will give a lecture "The Art of Detective Fiction — Russian, British, American, and French perspectives".
What makes the detective genre unique, and how has it evolved? What are the rules for constructing a detective story, and how have they been broken? What should a detective’s companion be like, and why are they even necessary? Why is Edgar Allan Poe considered the founder of the detective genre — and did he see himself as such? What is the story behind the creation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s and Agatha Christie’s stories? What defines a French detective novel, a hard-boiled American detective fiction, or a "cozy mystery"? How have famous detective stories been adapted into films, and how has the genre developed in Japan, Britain, the USA, Russia, and Italy? During the meeting, the club participants will try to answer these and other questions, analysing the detective fiction books through the lens of genre theory.
