2020 has seen the record number of applications from international students for Russian government funded places: the pandemic cannot stop education

The final lists of international applicants who successfully passed the competitive selection and were recommended for admission for Government-funded places have been published on the SPbU Admissions Office website.

We congratulate everyone on showing great performance during the selection process and are looking forward to welcoming the new St Petersburg University students. The admission process this year was more competitive than ever. Despite all the difficulties, related to the global pandemic, that international prospective students were facing while arranging the documents, 2020 has seen the record number of applications which is 35% higher than last year.

Students from 90 countries submitted more than 3800 applications for places funded by the Russian government scholarship. The geography of SPbU potential students became wider introducing such countries as Cuba, Chile, Chad, North Macedonia, Angola, Mauritania and Benin that took part in the competition for the first time. The countries leading in the number of applications remain the same as in the previous years and include CIS countries and the People’s Republic of China.

The most popular programmes among foreign applicants this year turned out to be Specialist programmes “General Medicine” and “Dental Medicine”, and Bachelor programmes “International Relations”, “Management”, “Programming and Information Technology”. As for the Master programmes, the top choices for prospective students included “Russian language and Russian Culture in the Aspect of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language”, “Graphic Design”, “Game Theory and Operations Research”, for Aspirantura programmes namely “International Relations and World Politics” and “Linguistics”.

You can find the final lists of international applicants who successfully passed the competitive selection and were recommended for admission for the Russian government funded places in the website section “Results 2020”.

If your name is stated in these lists in the green zone and you are planning to study in SPbU, you can find information on finalizing your admission following the link.

For the record:

In 2019, the amount of applications was 2800.
