For the third year in a row, the University remains the most popular university in the Russian Federation among international students. This is according to the data provided by the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo).
The University is constantly strengthening and expanding outreach activities for international students. This includes popularising the Russian language and culture across the globe, organising career-oriented events and intellectual competitions to name but a few. Thus, the University attracts international students with outstanding academic potential to apply to universities across Russia.
Additionally, the University organises the Olympiad for Schoolchildren. It is also open to international pupils. The final round is usually held abroad. In the academic year 2019–2020, the University held the final rounds in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Since 2018, the University has organised the Olympiad in Russian as a Foreign Language for international pupils and students. Since 2019, the University in partnership with the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation has implemented a project of Online Olympiads in Russian as a Foreign Language.
The University is also implementing a project Online School of St Petersburg University to enable international students at B1 level in Russian to learn the Russian language, literature, and history by using distance technologies. The University also has a project ‘Russian Language in Everyday Education of Pupils’ to assess the level of Russian for all students regardless of age. Moreover, the University encourages topic-related discussion sessions, including a methodical club for Russian language learners. The lesson videos are available to everyone.
The University also offers a test of Russian language proficiency for non-native Russian language speakers in distance mode (TORFL).
Additionally, the University has created online courses that focus on the Russian language, culture, and literature. We regularly offer webinars on the most up-to-date issues relating to how to teach Russian and what the test of Russian as a foreign language is like. We also offer webinars to prepare students to pass the test (in Russian and in English).
The University offers non-degree programmes in Russian as a foreign language, including a programme Preparatory Course (for International Citizens).
