SPbU announces results of the III International Olympiad of Russian as a foreign language

About 5,000 people from 132 countries participated in the Olympiad. All participants of the final stage have demonstrated high level of the Russian language proficiency, but only 729 participants became winners and awardees. The competition was very intense: some contestants who vied for prize places had a less than 1 point difference in score.

Participants who have passed qualifying stage completed tasks in a new format. In addition to reading, language game and solving riddles assignments, this year they also had to accomplish listening tasks.

SPbU holds the Olympiad of Russian as a foreign language since 2018. During that period more than 22,000 people from 147 countries participated in the competition.

Dmitry Ptyushkin, Director of the Language Testing Centre at St Petersburg University, noted that the Olympiad is one of the most effective and well-proven instruments for promoting the Russian language among foreign nationals. «This is the fifth Olympiad we held in an online format. Each time it becomes more and more clear that it is really important to provide accessible good-quality opportunities for people to test their knowledge in Russian through participating in the competition organized by the first university in Russia, which is a flagship in teaching the Russian language abroad. Now, when the Olympiad is completed, every day we receive a warm feedback and thanking letters from participants, their parents and teachers. It inspires and encourages us, gives us a new impulse to work better, it shows that we are doing the right thing», said Dmitry Ptyushkin.

You may ask your questions about the Olympiad by email olimpiadarki@spbu.ru.

According to the Director of the Language Testing Centre at St Petersburg University, SPbU Olympiad of Russian as a foreign language has become known all around the world, and wide and diverse geographical reach of this year shows persistent interest among foreign nationals in studying of the Russian language. He also noted that bringing the Russian language and culture closer to foreigners, support and strengthening their motivation to further study this beautiful and amazing language are some of the priority missions of SPbU.

All winners and awardees will be awarded with voucher for taking the TORFL exam of any level free of charge until the end of 2023. Those who took the first place will have an opportunity to take SPbU online courses on the spoken Russian language.
