SPbU becomes the first institution to hold YAEL in Russia

St Petersburg has become the first (and the only so far) institution in Russia to hold regular Hebrew Proficiency Test (YAEL). YAEL is accepted as evidence of Hebrew language proficiency for study and migration in Israel; until now we had to go abroad to take the test.

YAEL at SPbU is available for anyone - not only those who study or work there. The test uses authentic materials and is scored by the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation (N.I.T.E.) in Israel.

YAEL is only one aspect that a new Test Centre for Oriental Languages will focus on. The Centre is now being developed in close partnership with Israel, China, Japan, Korea, Turkey, and Egypt.

“This project will make SPbU the key educational platform in Russia to hold foreign language proficiency tests. Importantly, we will hold the tests under the agreements with the national institutions for testing and assessment. It is important both for those willing to take a test and get a certificate and for our students. The evidence that a student has been learning a language must be proved by getting a language certificate. To that end we engage our international partners and diplomats”, — said SPbU’s Rector Nikolay Kropachev.

For reference:

YAEL is accepted worldwide and has been designed within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): the test results are scored from А1 to С2. The test comprises two parts: non-free response questions (44 questions) and a free response question which is an essay and assessed in four categories: task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. The test report form provides your overall score and scores for each of the two components.

Please visit the SPbU web-site for details of the test dates and fees.
