St Petersburg University among the best universities in the world according to the ARWU 2023
St Petersburg University has once again secured a place in the esteemed Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and is positioned as the second highest-ranked university in Russia.
Every year, the top 1,000 universities in the world are included to ARWU. This year, ARWU recognised nine Russian universities for their outstanding scientific achievements. St Petersburg University has consistently performed well and holds the second position among Russian universities, surpassed only by Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in 2003. It is copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, a fully independent organisation on higher education intelligence and not legally subordinated to any universities or government agencies.
For this edition of ARWU, over 2,500 universities were evaluated using objective criteria. These include: the number of highly cited researchers; the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index; and the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
