St Petersburg University enters the world’s top 100 universities in ‘Linguistics’ and ‘Mathematics’
Quacquarelli Symonds has published the ‘QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020’. St Petersburg University has improved its position in three broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences and Management. It has entered the group of 51-100 of the world’s top universities in Linguistics and Mathematics.
In the larger group of disciplines ‘Arts and Humanities’, which includes linguistics, St Petersburg University moved up 11 places and came close to being in world’s 100 top universities: today it occupies 103rd place. Additionally, rapid growth was noted in Social Sciences and Management: St Petersburg University has moved up 29 places in just a year, and is now at 137th place in the world. We managed to improve the indicators by three points in Natural Sciences, which includes Mathematics – now we are 128th in the world.
QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020
In 2020, the University for the first time has entered the group ‘Life Sciences and Medicine’ and has immediately become one of the world’s top 250 universities in Biological Sciences. Thus, St Petersburg University is represented for the first time in all five broad subject areas of the ranking: Arts and Humanities; Social Sciences and Management; Life Sciences and Medicine; Engineering and Technology; and Natural Sciences.
Additionally, St Petersburg University retains high positions in many subjects within broad subject areas: History – group 101-150; Computer Science and Information Systems – group 101-150; Politics and International Relations – group 101-150; Law and Legal Studies – group 151-200; Physics & Astronomy – group 151-200; and Chemistry – group 201-250.
The QS subject ranking methodology is based on four indicators: employer reputation; research citations per paper article in relevant journals; the University H-index with a sufficient number of publications and reviews of the academic community and employers; and academic reputation. Points for these criteria are calculated separately for each broad subject area.
