St Petersburg University has entered the top 50 of the international university ranking ‘The Three University Missions’

Recently saw the publication of the third issue of the Moscow International University Ranking ‘The Three University Missions’. Compared to last year, St Petersburg University not only retained its position in the top 100, but also moved up 20 positions and was ranked 41st in the world.

The ranking development was initiated by the Russian Union of Rectors in response to criticism of the international scientific and educational community. It has repeatedly noted that such recognised rankings as Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds are focused only on the Anglo-Saxon model of education and do not take into account the national characteristics of most countries. For the first time in the practice of university ranking, MosIUR evaluates not only the traditional educational and research missions of universities, but also the social mission.

The Moscow International University Ranking (MosUR) is an international ranking operated by the Association of rating, ranking and other performance evaluations makers (ARM). It has been published since 2017. However, it is this year when the number of ranked universities for the first time exceeded 1,000. This meets the modern standard of the world's top ranking agencies. In the latest version of the ranking, there are 1,200 universities from 79 countries, including 74 Russian universities. The expert council includes 25 experts from 16 countries.

When compiling the MosIUR, subjective opinions of randomly selected respondents obtained during the surveys are not used. All criteria are as objective as possible: data from Clarivate Analytics and Elsevier; online platforms for mass education Coursera and edX; websites of scientific awards from the IREG List of International Academic Awards; open data available at the official websites of universities and national authorities; and much more. The objectivity of the ranking is confirmed by an independent audit conducted in 2018 by the international company PricewaterhouseCoopers Audit, which is part of the global PwC network.

St Petersburg University, Moscow State University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology are three universities that have been in the top 100 of this ranking for the third year in a row and continue to improve their positions.
