St Petersburg University to hold professional development courses for teachers from Uzbekistan
From 20 to 24 January 2025, St Petersburg University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan and with financial support from the Russkiy Mir Foundation, will organise professional development courses for 50 physics and computer science teachers from Uzbekistan. These teachers deliver the school curriculum in the Russian language.
The pilot launch of the project took place in November 2023 at the St Petersburg University branch in Tashkent, with chemistry and mathematics teachers as its first participants. The success of this initiative led to its continuation: at the request of the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the project operator — the St Petersburg University Language Testing Centre — organised a course for physics and computer science teachers in spring 2024.
The professional development courses were delivered to two cohorts, with a total of 100 subject teachers from Uzbekistan participating.
The second phase of training for physics and computing teachers will take place in January 2025. These teachers, having completed the spring course, expressed a desire to continue their professional development in the new year. Participants will receive 20 academic hours of in-person training led by the best teachers and lecturers from schools and lyceums in St Petersburg, including winners of the Teacher of the Year award and instructors from the St Petersburg University Institute of Pedagogy.
Currently, St Petersburg University is the only Russian university with a cooperation agreement in the field of teacher professional development with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The long-standing partnership between the University and the Russkiy Mir Foundation has repeatedly brought together specialists from numerous countries at St Petersburg University, including through the annual Summer School.
