St Petersburg University moves up again in the QS World University Rankings

St Petersburg University has taken 225th place in the QS World University Rankings 2021. It is a prestigious ranking of the world’s top universities published by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds. In just one year, the University has moved up nine places in the ranking.

The QS World University Rankings is one of the most established university rankings in the world. They are compiled according to a formalised scheme using the following six metrics: Academic reputation (40%); Citations per faculty (20%); Faculty/student ratio (20%); Employer reputation (10%); International faculty ratio (5%); and International student ratio (5%).

This year, St Petersburg University has significantly improved its position in two criteria: Academic reputation and International student ratio. More than 22,000 students are studying now at St Petersburg University. Almost 4,000 of them have come to study from other countries. The oldest university in Russia annually designs and implements new academic programmes aimed at international students. Some of the programmes are taught only in English.

We pay special attention to international exchange programmes and to cooperation with foreign partners. After all, there is a good chance that would-be leaders of states and diplomats may meet during their training within the walls of the University. International policies may depend on what kind of relations they develop, and how well they understand the history and culture of each other’s countries.

Rector of St Petersburg University Nikolay Kropachev

St Petersburg University entered the QS World University Rankings for the first time in 2013, taking 240th place in the world. Since then, it has been steadily improving its positions: 235th in 2019; 234th in 2020; and 225th in the current version of the ranked list.

For reference: In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, which was published this March, St Petersburg University strengthened its position in three broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences and Management. It also entered the world’s top 100 universities in Linguistics and Mathematics.
