St Petersburg University programme in Clinical Medicine: developing professional skills of future doctors
St Petersburg University specialist’s programme "General Medicine" is designed to train high-calibre medical doctors with a broad range of competencies.
There are two versions of the programme: taught fully in Russian and fully in English languages. During training, students develop professional skills of a doctor and approaches to advanced scientific research. The specialist’s programme "General Medicine" includes a wide range of disciplines to train medical doctors, including: general immunology; microbiology, virology, immunology; pharmacology; general surgery; medical genetics; general oncology; exercise therapy and medical supervision; and many other courses.
The academic programme is also implemented for physically challenged students taking into account their special needs, individual capabilities and health status.
Particular attention is paid to the teaching of fundamental disciplines in junior courses, which develops wide scientific horizons among students. Lecturers from different faculties of the University are involved in the training process. In senior years, students study clinical disciplines. To master their professional skills, students have practical training in: a well-equipped simulation centre of St Petersburg University; and leading medical institutions and healthcare centres.
Practical training is the key component in the training of healthcare personnel. As part of their practical classes and summer internships, students therefore participate in the diagnosis of diseases and the treatment of patients under the supervision of experienced professionals. Within the framework of the "General Medicine" programme, clinical practice is combined with research activities under the supervision of the academic staff of St Petersburg University.
The academic programme has been designed taking into account professional standards and the views of employers on the correlation of graduates’ competencies and job functions in their professional activities.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates can embark on a career at medical clinics, hospitals and medical centres, as well as research institutes and private medical institutions. They can also engage in teaching and research activities. The programme involves the study of nursing, including acquisition of the appropriate practical skills.
