St Petersburg University strengthens cooperation with the Republic of Karelia
St Petersburg University has discussed prospects for developing partnership and collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Karelia during a visit to Petrozavodsk. The parties discussed employer-sponsored education and advanced training of teachers and educators in the region.
Aleksandr Babich, Senior Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Admissions at St Petersburg University, met Dmitry Rodionov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Karelia for Economic Affairs, and representatives of leading regional enterprises, to discuss the changes in the legal regulation of admissions to employer-sponsored education. He focused on the importance of mutual cooperation with the regions of Russia and expressed hope that interested government agencies and commercial organisations would join the admission campaign at St Petersburg University in 2024.
In November 2022, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Karelia for Social Issues approved a joint action plan between St Petersburg University and the Government of the Republic of Karelia, implying cooperation in developing a labour pool. The partners agreed to provide support to talented schoolchildren and teachers of senior school students, and to organise joint scientific work on the issues of preserving cultural heritage sites.
During the visit, the delegation of St Petersburg University visited the Karelian Institute for Educational Development. Among the key areas of cooperation between St Petersburg University and the Government of the Republic of Karelia is to provide methodological support to teachers, said Aleksandr Babich. The parties expressed mutual interest in the development and implementation of joint programmes for advanced training of teachers of general education organisations and institutions of additional education, exchange of experience and cooperation in the methodological field between teachers of Karelia and educators at St Petersburg University participating in the implementation of general education programmes at the D.K. Faddeev Academic Gymnasium at St Petersburg University.
Representatives of St Petersburg University also visited the Engineering centre of fire robots technology ‘FR’. During the meeting, the parties decided to establish cooperation to prepare specialists in the field of applied mathematics and computer science, software engineering, robotics and artificial intelligence.
The delegation of St Petersburg University visited the Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Karelia. The parties decided to organise the participation of students and educators at St Petersburg University in the monitoring, preservation and popularisation of the White Sea and Onega petroglyphs.
At the end of the visit, the representatives of St Petersburg University visited the regional centre for identifying, supporting and developing gifted children ‘Sirius 10’, which is part of the resource centre for the development of further education of the Republic of Karelia ‘Rovesnik’. The parties reached agreements on the further development of cooperation, St Petersburg University’s sessions to prepare children for intellectual contests on the all-Russian and international level, joint Olympiads and contests, educational events at the centre ‘Sirius 10’ and the children’s technology park ‘Quantorium Sampo’.
