St Petersburg University trains theatre managers in partnership with the Alexandrinsky Theatre

  • >

Makhachkala hosts the first teaching and learning space of the educational project ‘The National Theatre School’ where the project participants will be trained according to the programme "Fundamentals of Management in the Contemporary National Theatre" developed at St Petersburg University. Anastasia Yarmosh, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Partnership of St Petersburg University, reported on the event during a press conference at the Russian News Agency TASS.

The All-Russian educational project "The National Theatre School" is an initiative of the National Drama Theatre of Russia (Alexandrinsky Theatre) and the Association of National Theatres of the Russian Federation. The event is held with the support of the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives.

Within the framework of the project, it is planned to create teaching and learning spaces. The first one has been created in the Republic of Dagestan. Leading experts in the field of stage and production management from St Petersburg University and the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts acted as teachers at the three-day intensive training event.

The participants in the first project event were cultural and art workers of the Republic of Dagestan aged 18 to 35. Students who have passed the final assessment will receive state-recognised diplomas of advanced training from St Petersburg University on the programme "Fundamentals of Management in the Contemporary National Theatre".

"The National Theatre School" is a project that is in tune with the values, mission and the aims of St Petersburg University, the oldest university in the country. Since 2008, we have been actively promoting the socio-economic development of the Russian regions, and ‘The National Theatre School’ helps to develop this initiative.

Anastasia Yarmosh, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Partnership of St Petersburg University

‘The national epic, drama in the languages of the peoples of our country, the national theatres are a unique cultural heritage, which has become the object of study in the academic programme of St Petersburg University. Today, we are launching a unique educational initiative that is a new phenomenon in the world educational practice in the field of culture and arts. I am sure that soon graduates of ‘The National Theatre School’ will become the authors of projects that we will follow with interest,’ said Anastasia Yarmosh, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Partnership at St Petersburg University.

The academic programme "Fundamentals of Management in the Contemporary National Theatre" was developed by St Petersburg University. It is aimed at acquiring skills of project management, teamwork, change management, and fundraising in the fields of culture and arts, marketing and producing projects. During the training, students will master theatre project management and learn how to plan a project and distribute roles among participants. Also, attention will be paid to using different resources for promoting theatre. Anastasiia Laskovaia became the author and leader of the programme. She is Academic Director of the bachelor’s programme in Management at St Petersburg University, Associate Professor in the Department of Strategic and International Management at the Graduate School of Management of St Petersburg University (GSOM SPbU).

The All-Russian educational project "The National Theatre School" is an initiative of the National Drama Theatre of Russia (Alexandrinsky Theatre) and the Association of National Theatres of the Russian Federation. The event is held with the support of the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives.

‘The National Theatre School’ will tackle the problem of a shortage of qualified theatre managers,’ Sergei Emelianov noted during the press conference. Mr Emelianov is Managing Director of the Alexandrinsky Theatre and Head of the educational project "The National Theatre School".

‘Today, more than ever, it is important to train a new young generation of theatre managers for the national theatres of the country who can respond to the current global challenges. This is because we live in a rapidly changing environment, and the field of culture and arts must keep up with the times. I am sure that "The National Theatre School" is the beginning of our long joint journey,’ said Sergei Emelianov.

In 2022-2023, "The National Theatre School" will be held in seven more regions of the country: the Republic of Tatarstan; the Republic of Buryatia; the Republic of Bashkortostan; the Mari El Republic; the Republic of Komi; the Sakhalin Oblast; and Kamchatka Krai.

The press conference dedicated to the project was also attended by: Zarema Butaeva, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Dagestan; Soelma Dagaeva, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Buryatia; Maria Balmastova, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Archives of the Republic of Komi; Roman Karmanov, Director General of the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives; Natalya Pakhomova, Acting Rector of the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts; and Alexander Barmak, Honoured Artist of Russia, Candidate of Art Studies, Professor of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts.
