Tatiana Chernigovskaya is a laureate of the OGANESSON Prize

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow has hosted the OGANESSON International Award Ceremony for Outstanding Scientists and Science Comminicators. Professor Tatiana Chernigovskaya, Director of the Institute for Cognitive Studies at St Petersburg University and Member of the Russian Academy of Education, was named the 2024 Laureate.
The award was presented to Professor Chernigovskaya for her outstanding contribution to the popularisation of science and the development of interdisciplinary research bridging together neurobiology, linguistics, and psychology.
Tatiana Chernigovskaya, Professor of St Petersburg University, Director of the Institute for Cognitive Studies at St Petersburg University, is the leading experts in the field of cognitive sciences, including psycholinguistics, neuropsychology, and neurophysiology. She is the author of more than 360 scholarly papers and numerous projects that focus on cognitive and linguistic abilities, how our human brain works, and how artificial intelligence can influence human activity.
In 2010, Tatiana Chernigovskaya was awarded the honorary title of Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation. In 2019, she became a member of the Scientific Council on the Methodology of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Research under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2023, the online course "Neurolinguistics" created under her leadership was recognised as the winnerof the international GMA Awards. In 2020, Professor Chernigovskaya initiated transformation of the Laboratory for Cognitive Studies into an independent subdivision of the University, i.e. the Institute for Cognitive Studies.
The founders of the prize are Iurii Oganessian, Scientific Director of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. In 2022, the scientist won the Sber Science Award for his groundbreaking work on the synthesis of superheavy elements and decided to use his prize to support talented scientists and science communicators. To this end, the OGANESSON Prize was established in 2023.
It is awarded annually for significant achievements in theoretical and experimental research in physics, chemistry, biology, and applied sciences, as well as for creative contributions to education and the popularisation of science. The competition is open to individual scientists, engineers, and technicians, as well as teams of authors who have made a significant contribution to solving scientific problems and advancing popularisation projects.
The full list of winners, selected by an international jury of experts chaired by Alexander Sergeev, Scientific Director of the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics and Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is available on the OGANESSON Prize website.
Tatiana Chernigovskaya is widely known as an educator and a science communicator. In the TV programme "Rules of life", Professor Chernigovskaya, together with other experts, took part in a discussion about how our brain works, how genes can influence our will and what fear is.
