We are speaking the same language, Maxwell's Equations
In St Petersburg, the Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) 2017, which brought together the world’s leading scientists in electromagnetism, is over.
At the PIERS, the scientists reported their progress and advances in the electrodynamics theory and told about its applications in our every-day life. Electrodynamics is everywhere: in medicine, energy industry, transport and even climate studies to name but a few. Apart from research, the forum focuses on education and teaching of physics.
The main event of the forum were the results of the competition between the young scientists “Best student paper award”, held at the PIERS since 2014. Those who take part in the competition must prepare a report for its oral presentation, and the jury can access how well they are prepared and how they can present information clearly and effectively. The winners were in Computational electromagnetism, electromagnetic compatibility, dissipation and electromagnetic theory; Metamaterials, plasmonics and и complex telecommunications systems; Optics and photonics; Aerials and microwave technologies; and Remote probing. Among the best reports was a report by SPbU post-graduate student Aleksandra Grigorieva on electromagnetic radiation generated by charged particles in the waveguide when it escapes from the two-layered dielectric region into the vacuum region.
“Now it can arouse such interests in the theory of electromagnetic processes and its applications in radiation generation and new methods of the particle acceleration. It was a surprise from me to win, as all the reports were of a very high quality and focused on really urgent issues”, — said Aleksandra Grigorieva. “PIERS provides young scientists with an opportunity to learn more about current state of the electromagnetism and its applications in our life”, — she added.
At the final session the Electromagnetics Academy (USA), the founders of the Symposium, decided to hold the PIERS in Toyama in Japan in 2018.
For reference:
PIERS provides an international forum for reporting progress and recent advances in the modern development of electromagnetic theory and its new and exciting applications. Established by the Electromagnetics Academy in the USA in 1989, it is annually held in Europe, Asia, or USA.
In 2017, PIERS in St Petersburg is supported by St Petersburg University, a centre of St Petersburg school of physics. A number of renowned physicists worked at the University: E. Kh. Lents; О. D. Khvolson; founder ofPetersburg school of optics D.S. Rozhdestvenskii, who educated and prepared renowned scientists А. N. Terenin, Е. F. Gross and S. E. Frish. Three graduates of the University — N. N. Semenov, L. D. Landau, А. М. Prokhorov — are the Nobel Prize winners. Significant contribution in the electromagnetics theory was made by A.S. Popov and V. Fok.
