Young people are getting more and more interested in China: Proved by SPbU!

At St Petersburg University, admission is closed to further applications for state-funded places at the undergraduate and specialist courses. In 2017, the most popular course is Economics with a focus on Chinese economy and language. Two third of the students are students from other cities and towns in Russia, and the number of those who score 100 at the Unified State Exam is record-breaking.

July 26, admission at St Petersburg University is closed for further applications for the state-funded places at the undergraduate and specialist courses, with over 12,000 applicants from Russia. For 2017-entry, you have to score at least 65 at each USE. The University offer a chance to all students from Russia to take part in the competition: anyone can enter the University, as it doesn’t hold any additional entrance tests, although, according to the Law about two universities, the University is entitled to hold additional entrance tests depending on the field of study.

Each year, SPbU attracts the most motivated, self-driven and bright students. In 2017, among those who have applied 976 applicants score 100 at the USE, an increase of 22% from last year. Many of them can boast not only excellent academic performance, but also personal achievements, which can help them to succeed and get bonus for entry. Almost half of them (6,055 applicants) have school certificates with honours (4,823 applicants), diplomas of the Regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiads for pupils (1,430 applicants), GTO (1,024 applicants) and others.

SPbU, as last year, has ensured that its courses meet the market demands and focus on priority areas in the Russian economy. In 2016, it opened Law with a focus on Chinese law and language, that got the most applicants last year, with the number of applicants per place 47 this year, which is less comparing with Economics with a focus on Chinese economy and language. The course has been opened this year and already set the ball rolling as the number of applicants per place is record-breaking – 56.43.

The most popular courses are practically the same as last year: Economic and Mathematical Methods (40.40 applicants per place), Engineering Physics (over 36 applicants per place), Oil and Gas (32 applicants per place). The courses that have been popular for a number of years are Public Administration (54.5 applications per place), Human Resources Management (52.7 applications per place), and International Journalism (29.8 applications per place).

The oldest university in Russia, as a rule, attracts students across Russia. In 2017, over 75 % applicants come from cities and towns in Russia: Krasnodar region, Leningrad region, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Sverdlovsk region, Cheliabinsk region, Perm region, Samara region, and Orenburg region. Among the top cities where students come from is surprisingly Moscow.

For reference:

SPbU is to publish the first admission orders on July 29 at the SPbU’s web-site. July 29, it is to accept those who don’t have to take entrance tests (those who have won Olympiads); and those who enter on a special basis.

The admissions orders of those who successfully applied for the state-funded places at the first srow will be published on August 3 at the SPbU’s web-site, the second row August 8.

Those who are willing to study at the oldest university in Russia but have not for some reason applied can do it up to August 9 on a fee-paying basis. The admissions orders for fee-paying places will be published in August 15 at the SPbU’s web-site.
