"St Petersburg was like a fresh breath of the air": an Indian student Hemanjali Karedla about Preparatory Courses and living in St Petersburg
Each year many students decide to study the Russian language, including students from India. Russia and India enjoy the long history of friendly and mutually beneficial relations. Learning a foreign language is a great opportunity to better understand people of the country. Additionally, speaking one of the most widely spoken languages in the world might be a significant advantage in the labour market.
Hemanjali Karedla is 18 years old Preparatory course student from the city of Hyderabad in Telangana, India, shared with us her impressions of studying the Russian language and living in St Petersburg. In June 2022, she graduated from the International School of Hyderabad with a Russian government-funded scholarship to St Petersburg University. After completion of the Preparatory Course, she is going to pursue a degree in Vocal Art (Academic Singing) and Visual Art.

Why did you decide to learn Russian?
My decision to acquire the Russian language stems from my interest in the country’s extensive history, rich culture, and advanced career opportunities. With a Ukrainian mother, my own personal history and identity is also tied to the country. I had already started to explore the Russian language and the country’s vast history in my diploma essays. These essays touched on topics such as the Leningrad Siege and Shostakovich’s infamous symphony, the Battle of Stalingrad, and so much more.
Do you like to live here? What do you think of St Petersburg?
Coming from a country known for its intense heat and nearly year-long summers, St Petersburg was like a fresh breath of the air. The scenic nature of Peterhof was the first of many wonders I encountered here. Being a person that loves rain, the slightly rainy weather did not deter me at all, and the chilly breeze only served to refresh me after a long day of working inside. The rains also remind me of home, which is always welcome.
St Petersburg itself is a massive cultural and historical centre, with an abundance of fascinating places to visit on every street. Even the most ordinary building can have the most extraordinary history behind it. Moreover, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception I received from most of the people I met here, even if they were strangers.
What was the major factor in your decision to apply for SPbU Preparatory Courses?
My decision to attend SPbU Preparatory course was driven by the University’s established good reputation, access to lots of resources, and high success rate.
Can you describe your education process? Do you like the atmosphere in classes?
The education process so far has been well paced and organised. The teacher maintains a nice balance between academic material and conversational topics with practical application. Each day we receive a manageable amount of homework which is then usually discussed in class to ensure maximum learning effectiveness.
There is a comfortable atmosphere in the class. It gives students space to make mistakes and express their doubts and uncertainties. The regular small tests do not feel like pressure points and allow students to study without fear of failure. Frequently, time is made for revision and accommodating student needs.
What do you enjoy the most about SPbU Preparatory Courses?
Firstly, I would like to mention that I love the Department. My learning experience was greatly enhanced by my teacher’s caring and fun instructional style. It made me more receptive to the language and the culture.
Secondly, what I enjoy the most would be the other students. My interactions with people from various backgrounds showed me the true meaning of internationality and really broadened my sphere of knowledge and awareness. This type of learning often goes unnamed but is accentuated well in SPbU. Coming from an international background myself, SPbU brought me more appreciation for different countries and their cultures.
Thirdly, I enjoy the access to resources of SPbU. We have access to an online and offline library, reading halls, and more. As a Preparatory Course student, I also have access to a decent amount of privileges and services that are usually reserved only for actual university students. This includes access to various faculties, clubs, events, and student discounts in several organisations.
Is it hard for you to learn the Russian language? What do you find the most difficult?
With a Ukrainian mother, my introduction to the Russian language was easier than for most people. I had a general grasp of informal spoken Russian. However, my reading and writing abilities, as well as my knowledge of academic and more cultural vocabulary were poor. Personally, I found learning Russian grammar a bit challenging. Nonetheless, coming from a multilingual background, I can say that the Russian language is not harder than any other language I have tried my hand at — French, Spanish, etc.
Please, tell us about your academic interests.
I am interested in the field of vocal art, specifically in opera and musical theatre. Through my participation in several stage productions, concerts, and online events, I developed a keen passion for performing. This passion and interest went beyond that of a simple extracurricular activity and prompted me to pursue the art professionally.
Additionally, I am also interested in the field of visual art. This interest stems from my early days of childhood and hasn’t left me since. Its ability to express nuanced emotions and messages — that are usually hard to convey in words — is outstanding. My desire to impact people’s lives in a positive manner led me to pursuing these academic interests in a career.
Furthermore, I enjoy learning Physics and History. While these subjects are not my primary focus, I aim to involve them in my higher education at SPbU through additional courses and online classes. In particular, my interest in history frequently appears in my music and art.
What are your hobbies?
Other than music and art, in my free time, I indulge in books and TV shows on physics, history, and psychology. However, I am also an avid fan of fantasy, crime, and mystery genres in all forms of entertainment. Additionally, I dabble in various sports and love to organise various events.
What academic achievements do you hope to accomplish?
During my time studying this Preparatory Course, I hope to successfully take part in some Olympiads and academic competitions. Also, I aim to complete the course with high marks in my final examination.
Are you willing to continue your education in our University?
Yes, definitely. One of the reasons for choosing this Preparatory Course is due to its ties to the University. SPbU has the perfect programme in Vocal and Visual Art for me. Specifically, the Academic Singing programme which offers all the necessary musical and stage skills, a good historical and linguistic subjects, basic skills of music pedagogy, and more. In particular, I was excited by the fact that the Faculty provides an opportunity to practice at the Academy of Young Opera Singers of the Mariinsky Theatre, where honoured artists of Russia, and People’s artists of Russia and Ukraine have been trained. SPbU Visual Art curriculum is also great, with a variety of courses to choose from.
Do you think that knowing Russian is beneficial for job hunting in your country?
I believe knowing any foreign language is a bonus on every employee’s resume. Every country, including India, is a host to many multinational companies with branches in Russia and other parts of the world. Taking into consideration friendly bonds between Russia and India, finding a job in one of the established trade businesses and other companies would not be hard.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I hope to see myself having survived my bachelor degree at SPbU with top honours and on the road to either pursuing a master degree or kick-starting my career in the arts.
Please say a few words to our prospective students.
I would encourage students to study at the SPbU Preparatory Course — not only for the education but also for the affordable lifestyle and student benefits. It is a great environment to study and relax in!
