Type of instruction Full-time
Duration 2 years
The master’s programme ‘Molecular Biology and Agrobiotechnology of Plants’ is a fundamental programme to train researchers capable of applying the cutting-edge conceptual approaches and the most advanced methods of molecular biology and genetics to solve a wide range of practical issues in agriculture.
Agrobiotechnology is a dynamically developing branch of scientific knowledge that covers a wide range of crucial issues of the 21st century, which can only be solved by using high-tech technologies. Among these issues are: food security and independence of the country; the need to improve methods of biological protection of agricultural objects; and the issue of biodiversity conservation.
Students receive in-depth knowledge in different branches of biology and special knowledge and practical skills in molecular biological technologies, including genetic engineering. This makes it possible for them to meet professionally the challenges in such a strategically important area for the country as the agricultural sphere.

- The programme ‘Molecular Biology and Agrobiotechnology of Plants’ is the first fundamental training programme in Russia for researchers capable of applying the cutting-edge conceptual approaches and the most advanced methods to solve a wide range of practical issues such as: ensuring the country's food security; improving methods of biological protection of agricultural plants; and biodiversity conservation
- Students receive in-depth knowledge in plant biology and special knowledge and practical skills in cell and molecular biological technologies, including genetic engineering and genome editing. This makes it possible for them to meet professionally the challenges in such a strategically important area for the country as the agricultural sphere. Students are able to carry out research on the basis of St Petersburg University or partner organisations, including foreign ones. The University provides unique opportunities for this: the cutting-edge equipment of the Research Park; the richest information resources; and communication with leading scientists from Russia and abroad. Graduates of the programme will be able to: successfully use biological systems in agricultural production; develop new technologies; improve existing plant varieties and microorganism strains; and create new varieties. Graduates of the programme are able to: plan, organise and carry out fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary studies using the most advanced methods; process and analyse obtained data using modern information and digital technologies, including working with databases (Big Data); speak English at a level sufficient to solve job tasks and for communication; and have teaching skills
- Graduates of the programme work in: research institutes; biotechnological companies; production associations and other organisations that provide consulting and other types of services for the agribusiness industry
- The programme is designed to train professionals with fundamental knowledge in the development and application of cutting-edge knowledge-intensive technologies in various branches of agriculture. Practical skills in the application of innovative agricultural technologies, genetic engineering and genome editing will enable graduates to successfully use biological systems in agricultural production based on fundamental research. Teaching skills will also enable them to teach
