Aleksandr Inostrantsev is the first Professor of Geology in the Department that he opened at St Petersburg University. He paid great attention to the Geological Museum and acquired new valuable collections for the museum. Aleksandr Inostrantsev was Professor at the Women’s higher education courses in St Petersburg; the St Petersburg Institute of Technology; the Military Medical Academy in St Petersburg; the Military Engineering Academy in St Petersburg; and the Academy of the General Staff in St Petersburg. He lectured on geology there. He created the first Russian course in geology (in two volumes), which had several editions. Many generations of Russian geologists studied this course. An outstanding Russian geologist, Aleksandr Inostrantsev is the author of a significant number of works on petrography, mineralogy, metamorphism, stratigraphy, palaeontology, hydrogeology of rocks, and the study of the geological structure of the north of European Russia.
