The lecture focuses on the great Russian scientist and inventor Alexander Popov and is set to mark his 165th anniversary. Alexander Popov, the University’s graduate in 1882, had a short scientific career, yet made fundamental contributions to the discovery of wireless telegraphy; was the first to carry out radio sounding of atmospheric lightning discharges; and also became one of the founders of medical radiology and a pioneer in the use of radio communications in the rescue of shipwreck victims. He also devoted a lot of time and effort to teaching and organisational activities. The lecture will also examine the history of the fundamental stages of the invention of radio communications. The event will be accompanied by a visual demonstration of Hertz’s experiments and the coherer device.
