Life on other worlds: hypotheses and the search for extraterrestrial life
SPbU Representative Office in Spain invites you to the online lecture "Life on other worlds: hypotheses and the search for extraterrestrial life". The lecture will be given by Anton Sheikin, theoretical physicist and associate professor at SPbU.
During the lecture, we will explore the history of the idea of a populated Universe, tracing its development from the 16th century to the present day. How have humanity’s views on the possibility of extraterrestrial life evolved over time? Which hypotheses have stood the test of time and scientific discoveries, and which remain mere curiosities of imagination? Special attention will be given to the search for extraterrestrial civilisations — from early attempts to modern high-tech methods.
We will also discuss how the laws of physics limit our ability to search for extraterrestrial life, the barriers they create, and how we have learned to overcome some of these challenges.
Lecturer
Anton Sheikin is a senior lecturer at the SPbU Department of High Energy and Elementary Particle Physics. Winner of the 2021 Russian Society "Knowledge" Award in the "Teacher — Educator of the Year" category, Sheikin teaches physics and popularises science. His research interests focus on gravity and geometric methods in physics.
The lecture will be streamed online in Russian with simultaneous translation into Spanish as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of SPbU — Russia’s oldest university.
