Spanish spots in St Petersburg
St Petersburg University Representative Office in Spain invites you to join the lecture "Spanish spots in St Petersburg". It will be delivered by Professor Anastasia Babaeva and St Petersburg tour guide and interpreter Larisa Kazino. The lecture will be held as part of the events to mark the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg University, the oldest university in Russia.
Did you know that St Petersburg keeps many places where you can experience the atmosphere of Spain? During the lecture you will discover where to find masterpieces by famous Spanish artists, master the passionate rhythms of flamenco, and taste traditional Spanish food.
Spain and Russia are bound by strong diplomatic ties and mutual interest for centuries. During the event, we will discuss the influence of Spain and Spaniards on the architecture and culture of St Petersburg. We will explore who and when established the first contacts between the two countries, as well as analyse political, trade, economic, and cultural relations in the past and present.
Additionally, we will recall famous Spaniards who lived and worked in St Petersburg, including admiral José de Ribas, composer Vicente Martín y Soler, and engineer Agustín de Betancourt.
We will also touch on modern times. You will learn what links the famous Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato with St Petersburg, discover which halls of the Hermitage keep paintings by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, and Picasso, and explore the Spanish spots of modern St Petersburg — bars, restaurants, cultural centres, and consular offices.
