The New Stage of the renowned Mariinsky Theatre hosted a celebration of the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg University. The ceremony in honour of the Russia’s oldest university was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, members of the Board of Trustees, famous alumni, students and staff of the University, as well as friends of the SPbU.

In his message to the students, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, a 1975 graduate of the Zhdanov LSU and a former employee of the University, emphasised that the history of one of the oldest higher education institutions in Russia is closely linked to important stages in the development of Russian scientific thought and to the names of outstanding scientists, teachers and mentors.

It is pleasing to note that today, as in centuries past, the University maintains an atmosphere of creativity and scientific inquiry, while also fostering strong traditions of student fraternity and camaraderie. I am convinced that by maintaining a strong link between times and generations and remaining open to new and advanced ideas, SPbU will continue to attract energetic, talented, and purposeful young people who strive to do good for the Motherland.

It occupies a prominent position in training professionals with the most relevant knowledge and skills required in the current labour market. Its cutting-edge laboratories conduct basic research, and its researchers make groundbreaking discoveries and innovative developments that contribute to the country’s technological independence.
