A new bachelor’s programme at St Petersburg University – a unique combination of Slavonic and German studies

Modern linguistic liberal arts education combines classical traditions with innovative practices and techniques. Applicants can choose: the most interesting and relevant areas for learning languages; courses; topics for their projects and studies; and, as a result, a future profession.

St Petersburg University launches a new academic programme in philology and linguistics for bachelor’s students – ‘Foreign Languages (Czech and English)’. It will make it possible for students to simultaneously study several languages and their features. They will also receive a fundamental knowledge of theoretical grammar and stylistics, and spoken and written languages. The advantage of the programme is in the in-depth acquisition of two European languages and the western humanitarian tradition. The learning process is focused on working with languages. It is based on uniquely designed courses and an interdisciplinary approach. Additionally, bachelor’s students will be able to choose a second Slavonic language for studying (Slovak, Polish or Ukrainian).

This is a full-time, four-year programme, and there will be only paid tuition places. You will find detailed information on admission policies here.

The programme focuses on providing graduates with fundamental professional education. Bachelor’s students will be taught by leading experts in philology and foreign languages. Teaching is based on present-day requirements. Students will master skills in interpreting and translation, and intercultural communication. Moreover, they will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the history and culture of the target language countries. They will be able to join the process of intercultural, corporate and scientific communication. International cooperation on the programme is carried out with foreign partner universities:

  • Charles University
  • Masaryk University
  • The University of Ostrava (the Czech Republic)
  • Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia)

Graduates will receive comprehensive training and valuable competencies necessary to build a rewarding career. These will include academic and professional development, a profound knowledge of linguistics, and research skills in linguistic fields. A good command of foreign languages will make it possible for them to: choose the profession of a linguist and a translator or interpreter; be engaged in teaching and research activities; and be involved in the field of mass communications and other areas.
