Qualifying stage of the Olympiads for schoolchildren in history of St Petersburg and history of engineering has started
On December 1, the qualifying stage of the second Olympiad for school students in history of St Petersburg has begun. This is a joint project of St Petersburg University and St Petersburg State Budgetary Сultural Institution «Museum and Exhibition Center» (‘Russia — my history’ historical park). The third Olympiad for school students in history of engineering has also started. The University organizes this Olympiad jointly with the Central Museum of Railway Transport of the Russian Federation.
Participants of the qualifying stage of both Olympiads have to prepare a research paper on one of the proposed topics.
The topics of research papers for the Olympiad in history of St Petersburg cover the 320-year history of the city. Thus, school students will discuss the role of St Petersburg as a new center of Russian industry (during the 18th century) or devote their papers to the exploits of citizens during the Great Patriotic War.

This year the Olympiad on history of engineering is dedicated to the history of bridge construction in Russia. Among the topics proposed for school students are "The achievements of Russian bridge builders at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900"; "I. Kulibin — an author of the bridge project across the Neva river", as well as other interesting topics.
The participants of the final stage will have to make a public presentation of their papers in a remote format.
The Olympiads for School students on the history of St Petersburg and the history of engineering are included in the Regulations for Admission to St Petersburg University in 2023. The results of these intellectual competitions will be taken into account for admission to the main educational bachelor’s and specialist`s degree programs of St Petersburg University. The winners and awardees of Olympiads can get five and three points as an individual achievement.
