Sociologists from St Petersburg University: more than 70% of teenagers in Russia are ready to get into employment in the coming years
According to the results of the Russia-wide survey "Teenagers 360", 72% of young people surveyed would like to find a job in the coming five to ten years. The survey was conducted by sociologists from St Petersburg University. Teenage employment and the results of the Russia-wide survey was discussed by the University experts at the 8th International Labour Forum.
Today, teenagers are ready to participate in labour relations and this trend is reflected in legislative acts, sociologists from St Petersburg University say. In 2023, a law was passed to simplify the employment of young people from 14 to 18 years old.
This initiative is also supported by parents. According to a Russia-wide telephone survey conducted by the Centre for Applied Sociology at St Petersburg University, 90% of parents with minor children have a positive attitude towards teenage employment. More than 23% of the parents surveyed also said that their children had already tried to earn money.
The discussion of teenage employment was initiated at the Labour Forum. The forum brought together representatives of government agencies, commercial and non-profit organisations, and teenagers. The results of the discussion underpin the process to prepare a standard for the teenage employment.
The 8th International Labour Forum is set to discuss the issues relating to teenage employment, parental concerns and expectations of teenagers. This is the topic of the discussion ‘The value of work and employment among modern teenagers: a reboot’. There is a special emphasis placed on developing positive attitudes among teenagers about work and employment. The discussion will be moderated by Maiia Rusakova, Director of the Centre for Applied Sociology at St Petersburg University. Maria Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children’s Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, will also take part in the discussion.
The main theme of the 8th International Labour Forum is "Labour, employment, human resources: new challenges and solutions". The event is organised by the Government of St Petersburg, St Petersburg University, the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member Nations, and the EXPOFORUM Convention and Exhibition Centre with the support of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation.
This year, a separate track of the Labour Forum will be dedicated to the University: #SPbSU300. It includes many events with experts and partners of St Petersburg University to develop cooperation between business, universities and government agencies. St Petersburg University is organising a scientific and practical conference to mark the 300th anniversary of the University. It will focus on the issues relating to employment and labour market, management and labour safety, career building and adaptation of young specialists in companies.
