SPbU graduate a semi-finalist in the international Games of the Future tournament
At the international Games of the Future tournament in the new phygital format, the all-female Energy Girls team, led by Zoya Sudakova, a 2023 graduate of St Petersburg University (Institute of Philosophy), demonstrated their technical mastery by placing in the top four in the Robot Combat discipline.
The Robot Combat Championship has become a major platform for exchanging experience in the field of robotics, bringing together inventors and the best engineers representing both Russian regions and various other countries. In the current season of Games of the Future, 16 teams from ten countries competed for first place and prize money. The teams had to design robots that could travel at a minimum speed of 8 km/h and inflict damage on their opponents.
The girls’ creation is a 110kg steel robot whose name is a reference to the barracuda, whose distinctive feature is its powerful jaw. Its main weapon is an air flipper that can knock the opponent to the ground. With their unique design, the Energy Girls defeated opponents from Chile and then the United Arab Emirates.
According to team captain Zoya Sudakova, who graduated from SPbU last year, reaching the semi-finals of a championship at this level is a significant achievement that motivates them to continue entering the arena and proving that not only robots with spinners, but also robots with flippers can win prizes. The girls will use the money to further develop and improve the robot.
The team itself is an example of how women can be leaders in robotics as well as good friends, with team responsibilities shared according to each person’s skills. Team captain Zoya Sudakova manages internal processes, allocates funding, develops sponsorship relationships and creates video content. Alexandra Kravchenko is responsible for the maintenance, assembly and painting of the robot, while Alena Voronina develops a reliable and functional design and improves the robot’s performance. The distinctive team uniforms and robot design were created by Valeria Orlova.
