St Petersburg University among the top 100 universities for Mathematics across the globe
ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has announced the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2024. St Petersburg University is presented in four subjects. The University’s highest score is Mathematics, where St Petersburg University is traditionally among the top 100 world universities.
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is a global university ranking in 55 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Among the ranking indicators are the following: World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration.
St Petersburg University entered the ranking in Mathematics in the 76-100 group of world universities, improving its performance compared to last year, when it was in the 101-150 group of universities. This year, St Petersburg University is also represented in such areas as Physics, Earth Sciences, Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The subject rankings are published on the ShanghaiRanking website.
Mathematical sciences at St Petersburg University have been actively developing for three centuries, starting with the research of the first professors of the University. Among them are the greatest mathematician of the 18th century Leonard Euler and the famous lawyer and mathematician Nicolaus II Bernoulli.
Mathematicians from St Petersburg University are represented in the Elsevier’s Top 2% Scientist Rankings. One of these scientists is Nikolay Kuznetsov, Professor at St Petersburg University, Head of the Leading Scientific School of the Russian Federation in the field of mathematics and mechanics, and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is also Head of the Department of Applied Cybernetics at St Petersburg University. Nikolay Kuznetsov is included in the list of Highly Cited Researchers, which presents about 0.1% of the most cited scientists in the world in their scientific field in the Web of Science. The list of the most cited researchers in the world also includes Gennady Leonov, the founder of the Department of Applied Cybernetics at St Petersburg University. The St Petersburg Government Award for outstanding results in science and technology is named after Gennady Leonov.
Today, the University students support mathematical traditions and become winners of international Olympiads. Over the past ten years, the St Petersburg University team has won one of the most prestigious mathematical competitions in the world, i.e. the International Mathematical Competition for University Students (IMC), five times. This year, our students won gold, beating competitors from Germany, Poland, Spain, France, Armenia, and Singapore to name just a few.
