St Petersburg University has opened online courses in Russian and history for schoolchildren in Latvia, Estonia, Spain and Kazakhstan

Online School of St Petersburg University

 Last year saw the start of the Online School of St Petersburg University in three Latvian cities at the same time: Riga, Rēzekne and Daugavpils. There were about 70 people attending the classes. The organisers register that this year there are three times more people enrolled, and the geography of the project has expanded significantly. Lectures will be held in Tallinn and Narva (Estonia), in Barcelona (Spain), and Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan).

The distance course consists of lectures in three subjects: the Russian language; Russian literature; and the history of Russia. The Online School project will make it possible for schoolchildren to: get acquainted with experienced teachers of St Petersburg University; receive a unique academic experience; and also broaden their horizons.

‘After receiving a positive response from children and their parents last year, we decided to conduct classes not only in Latvia,’ said Dmitrii Ptiushkin, Acting Director of the St Petersburg University Language Testing Centre and a project coordinator for the Online School. ‘The issue of organising classes in this format in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Syria is also currently being considered.’

Dmitrii Ptiushkin said that the issue of adding natural science disciplines to the Online School curriculum is currently being discussed – they will appear in the course in February. Additionally, in the future, students will be able to get remote access to the library fund of the University. Some lectures of the course are expected to be held in a face-to-face format with the participation of leading specialists from St Petersburg University.
