St Petersburg University online courses to help you learn the Hindi language and culture of India
St Petersburg University has launched a series of two courses designed for students who want to take the first step in learning the language and culture of India. As part of the new online programme, St Peterburg University experts will help you learn the phonetic structure of the Indian language, the correct use of basic grammatical constructions and simple vocabulary useful for everyday communication.
The first part of the series introduces students to the graphic structure of the language, the Devanagari script and the basic parts of speech. It also includes lessons on constructing simple and interrogative sentences. Video lectures prepared by the University’s specialists will help you pronounce sounds correctly and understand foreign language.
In the second course, students deepen their knowledge, explore the categories of time, learn how to express simple thoughts in Hindi and how to use complex ligatures. The programme also includes modules on the non-linguistic side of the country: geography, climate, ethnography and religions of India. You will learn about the diverse and rich oriental culture, its unique customs and traditions.

With the help of lexical material and dialogues spoken by native speakers, students will be able to understand speech by ear and use grammatical constructions and vocabulary correctly in real-life situations. The programme also provides the opportunity to practise language acquisition in a situational context. In the Area Studies module, some materials are presented entirely in Hindi, providing immersion in the language environment and facilitating better learning.
The online programme is open to anyone interested in the culture and language of India. At the end of the course, students will be able to: hold a simple conversation in Hindi; understand spoken language; and express themselves in everyday communication. They will also acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the cultural life of North India. These skills will be useful in both everyday and professional life.
