St Petersburg University opens a new master's programme ‘Studies in European Societies’ together with Bielefeld University (Germany)
A new English-language master's programme ‘Studies in European Societies’ is being launched by St Petersburg University. It will be of interest to those who plan to study in depth, in a contemporary context, the development of European countries and their social, economic, political and cultural aspects.
The new programme is the outcome of the development of the elective course block in the previously implemented master's programme in International Sociology. This fact indicates the demand for this field among Russian and foreign students.
What are its advantages over similar programmes from other universities? A wide range of training courses will make it possible to consider this field of study from the perspective of social sciences. The programme covers broad areas from information technology and methods in sociology to European production and consumption modes. During the training, students have an opportunity to take part in: international academic mobility programmes with internships in foreign countries; conferences and research internships; and winter and summer international schools.
This is a full-time programme, and there will be scholarship and paid tuition places. You will find admission policies here.
The master's programme ‘Studies in European Societies’ is interdisciplinary. It is aimed at the synthesis of knowledge and skills from such fields of study as: economics; sociology; psychology; political science; and social and cultural anthropology. Therefore, the competencies mastered by students are expected to make it possible for them to continue their professional activities in: sociological and marketing research; science and higher education; culture and art; economic and political analytics; the media; and others.
It should be noted that the programme has been designed and is implemented by St Petersburg University in collaboration Bielefeld University (Germany) with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Centre for German and European Studies of St Petersburg University. Also, among the academic partners are universities of Germany, Sweden, and Finland. Future specialists are qualified to meet the most complex global challenges as their training will be in English. The teaching staff involves not only the leading lecturers of St Petersburg University, but also representatives of foreign educational institutions and research centres. There will be a German lecturer from DAAD. Additionally, intercultural communication among students from different countries will enable a more comprehensive study of the current issues in present-day European societies. These include: the pressure of globalisation processes; the growing economic and political interdependence of nation states within the European Union; the escalation of social inequalities; new economic, social and environmental risks; the challenges of European integration and EU expansion; and rapidly growing migration flows.
The programme provides the necessary competencies for a successful career. In their graduation projects, students will defend the results of applied sociological studies tested in major international companies in Russia and Europe. Among the potential employers are the largest Russian and international organisations such as: Gazprom Neft; Federal Telecommunications Institute (Mexico); the economic development agency North Rhine-Westphalia Invest (NRW.INVEST); and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus.
The quality of acquired knowledge is in line with international standards for training masters in sociology. After their successful defence, graduates will be issued a diploma from St Petersburg University and an international certificate from Bielefeld University.
