St Petersburg University welcomes Сhina Law Society

During their visit to Russia, the delegation from the China Law Society visited St Petersburg University. The delegation was led by Mr. Zhang Sujun, who is a former Minister of Justice of China. The highlight of the visit was singing a memorandum of collaboration with the Faculty of Law of Jilin University.

The roundtable discussion with the foreign visitors was opened by Vice-Rector for Methodological Support M.Yu. Lavrikova, who briefed the delegation on the importance of the University for the Russian lawyers’ community. Many famous scientists, politicians, and civil servants are SPbU graduates. SPbU Rector N.M. Kropachev is the head of the Inter-regional Department of the Russian Non-governmental Organisation “Association of Lawyers of Russia” in St Petersburg and Leningrad region and serves as a member of the Presidium of the Association. Moreover, SPbU hosts events which are held during St Petersburg International Legal Forum. Marina Yu. Lavrikova expressed her gratitude to the Chinese colleagues to work jointly: “To ensure effective collaboration between Russian and Chinese law schools is an important vector for us. Our countries encourage active cooperation. Evidently, knowing legal systems of two countries, their transparency and explicitness are a crucial factor effecting the way how we develop international relations”.

The roundtable discussion was also hosted by the Senior Deputy of the SPbU Senior Vice-Rector in legal issues A.A. Soloviev, who briefed on how the Russian legal system differ from the others, what its distinctive attributes or aspects, the way how it is going to develop and what the main sources of law are.

Also, SPbU experts told about legal education at the University.  Even during the first years at the University, students in law develop their analytical and research skills, rather than just study law, said M.Yu. Lavrikova.  For that reason, interactive teaching, role-plays, case studies, practical modules in particular, is an important aspect of the educational experience. Moreover, to meet public expectations the University opens new educational programmes. In 2016, the University has opened “Chinese Legal Studies”. Rapid growth in trade and economy between our countries calls for specialists in legal systems of Russia and China who will be able to legally regulate our relations, said Mr. Zhang Sujun. The prospective graduates in Chinese Legal Studies will serve the aim!

As a result, St Petersburg University and the Faculty of Law of Jilin University have signed an memorandum. Dean Deputy of the Faculty of Law Ms Ren Xirong said that in China globalisation is well underway, student exchange programmes therefore are crucial factor in Russia-China academic and cultural relations and the memorandum is, to her mind, ensures further collaboration in law.
